Sleepers and Ties by Gail Kirkpatrick

The title of Gail Kirkpatrick’s debut novel nods at the book’s themes: family ties and deep friendships; traditions and passions that cross continents and time. Sleepers and Ties is a touching tribute to the prairie landscape, to the legacy of the Canadian railroad and its history in Saskatchewan, and to the bonds between rural communities and the people who live there. A delightful story about following your conscience and your heart, while learning how to discern between the two.

Originally from small-town Saskatchewan, Margaret works as a successful museum curator in British Columbia when she is called home to take care of her sister’s estate. A surprise legacy is initially more than she bargained for when she first returns to Saskatoon. Despite assurances from her lawyer, her husband, and her boss that her sister’s last wishes are completely devoid of reason, Margaret can’t help but explore how she might make good on the seemingly absurd request. The possibility brings her back to old friends and introduces new opportunities, both professionally and personally.

Sleepers and Ties is full of anecdotes about trains and their purpose in twentieth-century rural Saskatchewan. Even as a long-time resident, I had no idea about this province’s fascinating history, and (book-nerd that I am) I plan to visit the Saskatchewan Railway Museum on Highway 60 that is so often referenced by characters within the book for the first time this summer. Who knew this incredible history was right in my own backyard. And that’s what I love about books such as this! Readers with a connection to the prairie province, and to Saskatoon in particular, will enjoy vivid depictions of what is quintessentially Saskatchewanian: whistling through quack grass, enjoying the Bess gardens, swimming in a prairie lake (with or without covering one’s “porcelain bits”).

What is particularly enjoyable about this book is the author’s ability to flesh out robust and endearing characters. These personalities are easy and inviting, like homemade bread and Saskatoon berry jam. One can’t help but fall in love with Massey, with Adam, and of course, with George.

Sleepers and Ties is a charming and soul-satisfying book. It was like coming home every time I lifted the bookmark to resume reading. A wonderful achievement and a delightfully comforting novel.

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy to read and review!
